Hi Varun,

You need not improve anything as far as work experience or profile is concerned. You just need to present your experience well and blend it with post MBA goals.

Aim for a 660+ on GMAT. It shouldnt be very hard. For applicants with 8+ years of experience, GMAT score plays lesser importance but still it should atleast be average.

You sole focus should be GMAT score and dont waste your time on adding new extra currics such as community service.

Hi Anshu,

Your acads and extra currics look good. The only worry is your work ex duration which is pretty less.
You will not even complete 3 years but April 2014. ISB takes only few exceptional profiles with less than 3 years of experience.
We suggest that you add one more year of work experience and target a score of 720+ on GMAT.

Feel free to contact us for any queries.

Hi RR,

2 years of experience is way too less and add to it your IT background. We dont recommend applying this year.

Give ample time to your GMAT preparation. Target a 730+. At the same time look at moving out of software developer role and getting into Business analyst/ pre sales or some other role. Also, try getting into client facing role.

We believe that you need to strengthen your overall candidature ( as mentioned above) to have a realistic chance at ISB.

Hi Abhishek,

Your profile is good and diverse because ISB gets few applicants from construction & supply chain domain. Extra currics also look decent if not great. And your awards and achievement will help if used well to highlight strengths.

Focus on GMAT score because thats the only thing which you can control now and you need not worry about any thing else. If you can get a 720 or so it would makes your chances very good.

Thanks a lot for your kind help.
You need to do a great job with your essays (and many applicants with this background fail to do so) as otherwise analytics work gets counted as IT/ ITeS.

Talk about your team lead and client interaction experiences. Top it up with your BD/ presales experience. This will really help differentiate yourself from other applicants with similar background.

Lastly, if possible ( since you still have couple of months) retake GMAT and improve your score. Even if its a 20 points improvement, it will help.

Hi Lakshminarayanan,

I can;t help but notice that you have listed your contributions, both at work and outside at a cursory level without even talking about the impact. See you are applying to a business school where business impact, leadership, seeing the bigger picture, etc are important. So unless you tell us why you did what you did and what was the impact of your actions, your application is average. Of course, this all will come out at a later stage when we start working on the application, but start thinking in the impact sense so it comes naturally to you.

As far as the academics is concerned, I believe you do need to push your GMAT prep. Your acads don't seem great as of now, so GMAT is the only way yo compensate or it. Of course, your certification will be an added advantage. So go ahead, prep for your GMAT and target a 720+. Take a free diagnostic on edvento.com to see where you stand.

3. Won various performance based awards in the current firm

Please suggest the chances of me getting into ISB 2014. And in case you think there are ways in which i can improve my profile, please do suggest
Hi Prateek,

You have posted very objective details about your profile. ISB admission is much more than this. The only thing you have told about your work is business research. Tell me what was your role, what challenges have you solved, how have your responsibilities and role evolved with time, what was the impact of your work and what do you want to do post MBA. All these questions combined when thought through well, will make an impressive application. Am sure you'll have a lot of interesting stories to help boast about yourself. Bring them out.

Your GMAT score and acads are good. Though B.Tech grades are low, your GMAT and Bits Pilani brnd name has compensated for that. Now focus on your work and your passion outside of your work.

Hi,

We will say that you have been a good performer but in a typical IT role. Now, that will be a challenge. Your job experience and extra currics do little to differentiate you.

Since you are applying next year, try to get a great score on GMAT ( say a 750) because a 700/ 710 on GMAT will not help you case.

In the meantime try to get involved in some part time consulting, business venture etc so that you can leverage some skills gained from that experience.

Another good way to strengthen your profile will be to develop your expertise in banking and finance. Try getting a few certifications e.g. CFA and pick up some consulting assignments in this domain which dont use your software expertise but your finance domain knowledge.

Also I am planning on shifting to another company, Is that a bad thing in terms of applying for ISB? In order to amend my low undergrad cgpa should I enroll myself in some management related diploma or would any distance postgrad education before applying in ISB?

Thank You.
Hi,

Your biggest differentiator is that you are an international applicant to ISB.
The biggest challenge is that your profile lacks consistency... Electronics engg, then experience in microfinance/ poverty reduction and then working with a communications company.

If you are making a move to a role in different domain, it will be difficult for you to justify all these moves.Give a real good thought to your Post MBA goals ( also if ISB is right place for that) and blend it well with your past experience.

Your GPA is also low, so GMAT score will be very important for you. Try to get atleast a 710 on GMAT.
Extra currics and other stuff looks ok, so dont worry about that.

Hi Namrata,

You need come out with a solid reason why you want to join an NGO. If that's what you are really interested in, go for it. Chuck the IT experience. Work there for a while, do some significant contributions, trust me, it'll be a highly transformational experience.

Once you work there for a while, then I think it'll be the right time for you to decide whether an MBA really makes sense. Coz in the current scenario, I feel you want something else and going for an MBA without knowing its impact on your career. An MBA is not cheap.

Hi Prateek,

Nothing is bad and nothing is great about the profile. We think its is more about the way you have presented it. You need to improve upon extra currics but most importantly you need to present your work ex really well. From our understanding of business research firms you must have worked on projects across domains and must have interacted with clients. Make sure that you leverage these well in essays. Consulting is the best option for you post MBA ( atleast from MBA admissions perspective).

Your recos should talk about your promotions and achievements strongly.

Hi Chirag,

Your profile is strong. Work experience and extra currics are good as ISB doesnt get many applicants from sales/ customer service background and M&M is a good brand.

Just focus on getting a GMAT score close to 700 and you will be good.
