Seeming to be the only orgainisation fighting for the rights of poor people in the south, Hosea Hudson, a labourer in Alabama, joined the communist party in 1931.

(A) Seeming to be
(B) As
(C) In that they seemed
(D) Since it seemed

Hi,
(A) Seeming to be --> This erroneously modifies Hudson(noun followed by comma will be the subject) instead of 'Communist..'
(B) As --> same as A
(C) In that they seemed --> they cannot refer to organisation
'because' is preferred to 'since' when it used to state a reason.

Hence, E

Dont you think saying 'It' right in the beginning of the sentence is wierd? to me none of the options sound fine. Thoughts?

Hi,
We are not required to frame a perfect sentence. Choose the best of the given options.
'it' refers to the communist party.

we need to show the contrast here. Only E threatens D, but Seemed to be is awkward and wordy.

Hi,
'seemed to be' is absolutely fine. There is nothing awkward or wordy in it. I am not sure whether seemed (without to be) is correct in D. Even if it is correct, 'because' is preferred over 'since' as I have already stated in my previous post. Would like to know OE.

Hi guys,

My choice is E.

(A) has a misplaced modifier, since "Hosea Hudson" is a person, not an organization. This is the same error in (B). In (C), there is no plural noun to replace "they" with, since "Hosea Hudson" and "the communist party" are both singular.

I would argue that this is NOT the best question, since both (D) and (E) are constructed in such a way as to imply that "it" could possibly replace "Hosea Hudson" or that "Hosea Hudson" is an "organization."

However, of the two, "seemed the only organization" is unclear. We wouldn't follow the verb "seem" with the definite article ("the"). We would say, idiomatically, "seemed LIKE", "seemed AS" or, as choice (E) says, "seemed TO BE."
