Knewton's Wednesday Brutal Math Challenge - Week 2

by , Mar 24, 2010

We're back. Great job last week. We're once again playing for the new Knewton t-shirt. First person to answer correctly (you must show your work!) gets it. Data sufficiency in the house...

Triangle RST lies in the xy-plane. Point R has coordinates (a,b), point S is at the origin, and point T has coordinates (c,d), such that bd + ac = 0. What is the area of triangle RST?

1. [pmath](sqrt{a^2 + b^2})(sqrt{c^2 + d^2}) = 48[/pmath]

2. [pmath]sqrt{a^2 + b^2} + sqrt{c^2 + d^2} = 14[/pmath]

(A) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient

(B) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.

(C) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.

(D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.

(E) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.
