GMAT Focus vs GRE vs Executive Assessment in 2026: Which Test Should You Take?

by BTG Expert Team, Oct 30, 2026

A hand reaches for one of three plain notebooks on a wooden table

Take the GMAT Focus if you are sure about business school. Take the GRE if you are also weighing other graduate programs. Take the Executive Assessment only if you are an experienced professional and every school on your list accepts it. Harvard, Stanford and Wharton take only the GMAT or the GRE, so check your schools before you pay for any test.

The three tests side by side

Every number here comes from the test makers: GMAC makes the GMAT and the Executive Assessment (EA), and ETS makes the GRE. Prices are for the United States.

The GMAT also lets you pick the order of its three sections. On the GRE, the essay comes first and the other sections may come in any order.

What 13 top schools accept

This matters more than the table above. We read each school’s own page on October 30, 2026:

  • GMAT or GRE only: Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg, Chicago Booth, Berkeley Haas, Dartmouth Tuck.
  • GMAT, GRE or EA: Columbia, Duke Fuqua, Michigan Ross, NYU Stern, Cornell, UCLA Anderson.
  • A route with no test score: Michigan Ross takes a written Statement of Quantitative Academic Readiness. UCLA Anderson lets you share coursework, certifications or work examples in a short essay.
  • Other tests: NYU Stern also accepts the LSAT, MCAT and DAT.

Here is how to use that list. Say your schools are Wharton, Ross and Stern. Ross and Stern would take the EA, but Wharton would not. So the EA would leave you needing a second test. Pick the GMAT or the GRE and you need only one. If even one school on your list is GMAT or GRE only, skip the EA.

Stanford, Tuck, Kellogg and Fuqua each say outright that they have no preference between the GMAT and the GRE. GMAC does claim that GMAT scores made up most of the test submissions at the top 10 US MBA programs. Keep in mind that GMAC sells the GMAT, just as ETS sells the GRE.

Which test suits you

Choose the GMAT Focus if you only want a business degree and you like reasoning through data. It has no essay, and GMAC says it does not test vocabulary or grammar. GMAC’s research puts the word knowledge needed at 6,000 to 7,000 word families for GMAT Verbal and about 9,000 for the GRE. GMAC also says the GMAT tends to be harder for people without a math background, so test that before you commit.

Choose the GRE if you may also apply to law school or to a non-business graduate program. It is 17 minutes shorter and costs less. It is harder if your vocabulary or writing is weak, because roughly a quarter of its time goes to the essay. Results also take longer: 8 to 10 days against 3 to 5 for the GMAT.

Choose the EA if you are a busy, experienced professional aiming at an Executive MBA, and your schools accept it. GMAC says it needs little preparation and that more than 100 schools and executive MBA programs accept it. It is the shortest test and the most expensive one. Unlike the GMAT, you can only change answers inside each short part, and you cannot go back to an earlier part. GMAC also notes that once you finish, you cannot cancel an EA score, so leave your school list empty until you have seen the result.

A timing detail that can decide it

Think about your timeline. Applying in Round 2, with deadlines from January 4, 2027? GMAC advises testing at least four weeks before your deadline. For a January 5 deadline that means December 8. If that first test goes badly, the GMAT lets you try again after 16 days, on December 24. The GRE makes you wait 21 days, until December 29, and its official result takes 8 to 10 days more, which lands after the deadline. Some schools let you enter your own score on the form first: Booth, Wharton, Tuck and Fuqua all do.

You can compare our list of what each GMAT Focus score means with your target schools once you have a practice score.

How to decide this week

  1. Write down every school on your list and read its test rule on its own site.
  2. Take one free practice test. GMAC gives you two free GMAT practice exams in its Starter Kit, and ETS offers free GRE test prep.
  3. Score your weak spot honestly. Math worry points you toward the GRE. Vocabulary worry points you toward the GMAT.
  4. Pick one test and stop comparing. Do not study for two at once.
