Hello friends,

About a month back when I gave my GMAT exam, I encountered many CR questions which were above the OG-Level. I felt a need for thread which can be complied to have some really good CR's.
I am going to start this thread, basically I will be posting questions mostly from LSAT sets, and if they are from somewhere else I would quote the source as well.

I believe this to be a one stop collection of CR's for practice.I would post the OA after a little discussion.

Please State the reason for choosing a particular answer and rejecting others. That would help everyone to develop strategies for attacking CR's

It would be better if we can have some reasons along with answers. By the way D is not really out of scope!

I narrowed it down to D & E:
D look valid...E is the culprit>..

D: Voters who benefit from low fares...are against raising city taxes..
If the city raises fares.. some voters who benefit from low fares would be effected...but if they continue subsidising the fares.. they will have to raise the TAX..which is a NO-NO..

So, D is valid

E: Is out of scope.. as it talks abt "earn wages" above national average?
--> No mention of wages in the argument..

I go with E:

P1 - Fares for city run public buses are aided by tax revenues
P2 - (counter premise) it benefits outsiders who commute to work in Greenville
P3 - Some councillors say that tax should benefit those who pay them

Conclusion - Bus fares should be raised to cover the cost of the service

A - many business would relocate outside the city and as a result wouldn't benefit the tax payer in the city. So raising the fares WILL not benefit the tax payers. Hence this will weaken the conclusion.

B - High fares will increase the air pollution and increased cost in maintaining the streets of the city. So it gives another reason for NOT increasing the fares.

C - Increasing fares would cause a disadvantage to the cities residents. So this weakens the conclusion and P3.

E - People who work in Greenville and earn above min wage pay tax of 5%. So this attacks P2 as outsiders are supposed to pay the tax.

D - Talks about increasing local tax and seems unrelated to the actual argument, which talks about increasing bus fares. So this seems to be the correct answer .

So IMHO OA is D.

Yes the OA is D

Below is the official explanation :

The issue here isn’t an increase in local taxes. The councillors simply want to
discontinue using city taxes to subsidize the bus system, and make up for the lost money by raising the bus fare. This, by itself, doesn’t imply that city taxes will go up, so the fact that city voters oppose a potential tax hike (big surprise there) has no bearing on the argument.

The flawed reasoning is that a conclusion is derived regarding oneself while considering the actions/opinions on other people.

censorship is defined.. and then an action is categorized as uncensored..

Similaryly heroism is defined and then an action is considered as unheroic...

Key to solve questions of these form is to separate the premise and the conclusion and look at the way how the author arrives to the conclusion.
