every time i am getting confused with identifying the singular and the plural ones. here in this example should i see "themes" (plural) or should i see "poetry"(singular) ?

Themes is the subject of the sentence. If you are unsure try to understand the meaning of the sentence. that Rita Dove explores in her poetry - modify themes. If you are having trouble identifying the subjects in a sentence then get on with OG and try to identify the subject verb part for all the questions with all the choices. There will be more than one SV pair in a question. Don't look for other errors just try to understand the meaning and find SV pairs in each sentence, it will take hours to finish but the effort is worth it. Once you get used to it you will fare well.

first of all first try to identify the main verb and see how other words structure itself to form a clause.

here :

The themes that Rita Dove explores in her poetry --- subject
is - main verb
universal - adjective predicate.

parsing the subject :

The themes -- noun
that Rita Dove explores in her poetry -- adjective modifying the noun.

Subject is always a noun slot -- so what drives this slot is a noun. Hence it is the noun that decide the S-V agreement.

another way to identify the subject :

place the main verb before the subject, converting it into a interrogative one : if it make sense then it is the subject.
