The table above shows the average (arithmetic mean) price per dozen of the large grade A eggs sold in a certain store during three successive months.
If 2/3 as many dozen were sold in April as in May, and twice as many were sold in June as in April, what was the average price per dozen of the eggs sold over the three-month period?
(A) $1.08
(B) $1.10
(C) $1.14
(D) $1.16
(E) $1.18

Let us assume that no. of eggs sold in May = x dozens
Then, no. of eggs sold in April = 2x/3 dozens
and no. of eggs sold in June = 4x/3 dozens
So, total eggs = x + 2x/3 + 4x/3 = 3x
Total amount spend = (2x/3) * 1.26 + x * 1.2 + (4x/3) * 1.08 = 3.48x
Average price per dozen = 3.48x/3x = 1.16

The correct answer is D.

Oh...Oh i did not understood the reason for dividing by 4. There are only 3 months for which average to be calculated and why 1.08 is made twice???

Average price per dozen of the eggs = {1.26 + 1.2 + (2 * 1.08)}/4 = 4.62/4 = 1.155, which is 1.16 approx.

The correct answer is D.

The average price per dozen of the eggs sold over the three-month period = Total price of the eggs/total number of eggs
Let the number of eggs sold in May be x =((3/3)*x) dozens
then the number of eggs sold in April is ((2/3)*x) dozens
and the number of eggs sold in June is ((4/3)*x) dozens
Cost of eggs sold in a month = Average price per dozen * # of dozens sold
Cost of eggs sold in a April = ((2/3)*x)*1.26
Cost of eggs sold in a May = ((3/3)*x)*1.20
Cost of eggs sold in a June= ((4/3)*x)*1.08

The average price per dozen of the eggs sold over the three-month period =
[((2/3)*x)*1.26 + ((3/3)*x)*1.20 + ((4/3)*x)*1.08 ]/[((2/3)*x)+((3/3)*x)+((4/3)*x)]
= $1.16

For another approach check this:
this is a case of weighted averages,thus we have:
Let x be the # of dozens sold in May,thus 2/3x will be in april and 2 * 2/3 * x in June.
Thus by formula of weighted averages we have:

((2/3 * x * 1.26) + (x * 1.20) + (2 * 2/3 * 1.08) )/ ( (2/3*x) + x + (4/3 * x))


Solve the above equation to get answer as D which is 1.16.
