(A) A star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole after it passes through a red giant stage, depending on mass.
(B) After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.
(C) After passing through a red giant stage, a star’s mass will determine if it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

This does not make sense. No clear "noun(star)" that is passing through a red giant stage.

in B,
" depending on its mass," modifies red giant stage instead of star..

there is an error of dangling modifier..

A) .....after "it" passes......
Usage of "it" is ambiguous. Does "it" refers back to what? a star? a white dwarf? a neuron star? a black hole?? uncertain. so A is out.

B) ...."depending on its mass"..... describes "stage" and it does not make sense at all. Illogical.

C) GMAT prefers "whether" to "if"

D) correct

E) ...."it"...... mass? star? ambiguous.

In C there is one more prob.

Here, after passing through a red giant stage, is modifying a star's mass whereas it should modify a star!!
