Reporting that one of its many problems had been the recent extended sales slump in the women's apparel, the seven store retailer said it would start a three month liquidation sale in all of the stores.

a) its many problems had been the recent

b) its many problems has been the recently

c) its many problems is the recently

d) their many problems is the recent

e) their many problems had been the recent

The OA is A
But how can ITS refer to RETAILER
As far as I know retailer is someone who buys goods in large quantities and then sells these goods.

As far as I know retailer is someone who buys goods in large quantities and then sells these goods.

not necessarily, and the second occurrence of "it" contributes to the proposition that the retailer here is not an individual(s) but firm - hence called "it"

although, I must admit this sentence is not using the correct style - inanimate subjects can not speak, are unable to say

as such the pronoun "it" refers to inanimate subjects (objects)

what's the source?
