My profile is as follows:
1)X(2001) - 81.1(State Board)
2)XII(2003) - 77.5(State Board)
3)B-Tech IT(2007) - 8.12(WBUT)

Work Life :
4 and half Years of IT-work exp (till date) in one of the leading consulting MNC.
Key Pointers:
Onshore experience of 1 year 7 months (Montevideo, South America),with direct interaction with clients. Have picked up decent Spanish speaking/reading abilities from this stint.

Handled 2 batches of around 35 new Joiners each as a mentor as a part of Learning and Development program for around 2 months.

Received several awards/appreciations from client and through internal talent appreciation platform(Certificates available).

Microsoft certified professional.

Currently working as Module lead managing end to end development of projects with 4-6 resources.
Participated in international innovation competition organised by the organisation I am working for.

Worked in BFS and Healthcare domains.
Extra Curriculars -

Played district level cricket, captained school cricket team.

Singles and doubles champion in table tennis in inter college tournament.

Won a badminton tournament organised in office (no certificate).

Do blogging (very less) and photography (photograph chosen for an exhibition from a national level competition - no certificate).

Had set up a business group for starting up a entrepreneurial venture, which eventually didn't succeed.(Can get recommendation from people involved in this)

Have been involved in college fest activities. Have been part of the group which started the technical fest in my college.

Questions that I have:
1) The GMAT score I should target for?
2) I have a medium size family business(5-6 years old) run by my dad, I have very less direct involvement in that till now. Though I have an idea about how the process work. How I can I represent this to fetch an advantage?what kind of involvement in this will give my profile more weightage?
3) I have tried to be as elaborative about my achievements as I can above, what points(If any) should I delete from the above?

My short term goal is to gain exposure about the internal workings of a company from a middle/senior leadership role, so that I can gain experience and expertise in running a business and eventually start up a business venture(long term goal).

It would be great if you can kindly evaluate my profile and provide you feedbacks.
Hi,

Your profile has a balanced mix of good job responsibilities & achievements and extra curriculars. International experience ( especially Latin America) will help and so will the mentor role that you have played.

But still look at GMAT score in excess of 700. Since you have 4 months before ISB R1 deadline, devote good 2-3 months to GMAT and then give it a shot.

Unless you have good funadamental knowledge of your family business and have been actively involved in it dont mention it. Else you might end up getting pulled into a related conversation in the interview which can go the wrong way.

Hope this helps.

Favorable stuff --

1. M. Tech IIT B , thermal, 8.1 CPI
2. 4+ (will be 5 till application) years of work ex in Tata Motors engineering research center as Manager in engine design, mostly technical but also handled managerial responsibility like project management, vendor development and collaboration and lead a small team of 4 engineers. project is deployed in Thailand market , support to production and service teams. member of product development team. also worked on TATA Nano engine design. very strong engineering fundamentals.
3. GATE 2006 AIR 48. CAT 2011 - 99.38
4. winner IIT B chess championship.
5. some volunteered work in TATA Motors CSR activity but no formal recognition.
6. member of TML Talent pool.
7. played hockey at school level, some chess wins in TML.
8. member of saftey initiatives comittee in TML engines.

Unfavorable --

1.ordinary acads - 10,12 in mid 70s, BE mechanical 69%. (from National Instt of Tech. Raipur)
2.have a gap year.
3.nothing on extra curricular front - except Gen Sec of Mech Engg Association in graduation. and 1-2 activities in Tata Motors.few more activities but no certificates (does it matter?)

Queries -- (i will appreciate a frank opinion.)

1.Do i stand a good chance of getting in to ISB.(as far as profile is concerned), if yes then how strong (say on a scale of 1-10, 10 being very, very strong, 1 being very little)
2.What GMAT score i should target? any recommendation regarding prep material ?

thanks a lot for your time.

Hi Manuag,

Agreed. Your GMAT and GPA both are average. But work ex looks pretty decent. A lot will depend on how you use your client interaction, team lead experience ( we are assuming you must have led a team in 7 years), and international experience.

Community service will not be very fascinating for ISB as almost every student mentions something or the other. So, pick up something else from your extra currics.

Since you have time retake GMAT if possible and if you improve your score to 720+ or so that will make chances much better.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Nothing wrong with your profile. Infact it looks good and well rounded. The only worry is the year gap. If it is between 12th and college then there are no issues but if it is during 4 years of engineering than it will give a very bad impression.

Target a score of 700 on GMAT.

Hi Kumar,

Your extra-currics and acads are within control. Just try to score above 700 and you'll be fine.

The area of concern is your experience. You have not described what your role and experience have been. For an MBA application, it is very important that you show what you have done and what impact you have made in your organization. If your job demands management skills, telling this fact will not add any value. You have to show it with examples to highlight the impact. So if you are planning in advance, think of various examples at work that have made an impact and have enabled you to show your leadership potential. In addition, take up additional responsibilities at work that will help build your management skills and improve as a leader.

Hi AKG,

It is good that you realize that your XII and grad performance is low. Moreover, the 3 year gap will be a major concern. It's not that you can do anything about it. But it will be extremely important to explain what did you do in those 3 years. It is fine that you were medically unfit to work. But what else did you do? Did you spend that time learning something? Did you do something useful to yourself?

Secondly, when writing your application, focus on the impact of your work. How did your responsibilities change over time and how you have shown leadership potential?

If you are yet to write your GMAT, try to score at least 730. Obviously, the more the better to overcome low performance in your undergrad.

Hi androidfan,

You have a strong profile. To address your concerns:

1. Yes grad score is average as against your XII score. But yes, you have shown good extra currics involvement in college which to some extent can be compensated. But make sure to not use it as an excuse in your app. Also apart from showing extra curric involvement, do not limit just to participation. Show how you led things, made an impact and emerged as a better leader.

2. To show consistency and overcome your average undergrad score, try to score at least 720.

3. The family business part is fine. Just focus on your job, your contribution to the business. How did the business change with your contribution. You can focus on your area of responsibility only. And yes, you can present it well. :)

All the best

Hi ThinkAdmit,

Thanks for your reply..... I understood that I should give emphasis on professional achievements to showcase myself as a leader. I will work upon this to make my profile strong. But as of now...

1. As a Senior Engineer, I am leading a team of 6 members and their responsibility is to execute the plan given by me. Also I have to monitor their work. Our team has completed some works well ahead of all other teams and it is considered as minimum cycle time to complete those works.

2. I did participate in SGA (Small Group Activity) to kill annoying work related issues and to make some improvements. As a result, notable changes has happened in our organization.

3. Participating in TOC implementation team.

Whether all these points add value to my profile???

Regards,

Kumar
