Hi,

I would like to know my chances at business schools in the USA. It would help me decide if I should try applying thr or find something in India. If I go abroad I would want to go for a Top 10-15 program.

GMAT: 740

Academics: Class X (School): 84%
Class XII (High School): 76%
Engineering (I am a Computer Engineer): 7.62/10

Extra-Curricular: I have decent extra-Curricular involvement these include-

1) Captain College Basketball Team: I wasn't in the team during my first year but went on to captain it. Lead the team to quater-finals at a national level tournament.
2) Lead Vocalist for a Band.
3) Editor College magazine.
4) I co-founded an Evening School for Underprivileged children, it still continues to this day.
5) Member college cricket team.
6) Co-Ordinator college annual Festival.
7) Debates and Quizzes at School level.

Work: In december I will complete 3 years in work.

1) I started as an Indian IT male with Infosys (10months) but I always had a thing for business studies/entrepreneurship. I knew MALE IT tag would hinder my dreams of a great B-School so I decided to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams.
2) Left infosys to start a venture that did not materialize but my interactions with entrepreneurs led me to an Educational start-up, test preparation company (mbaguru) and I started discussing ADAPTIVE LEARNING with them.
MBAGuru asked me to join them and implement ADAPTIVE learning. It has been a very entrepreneurial experience where I handle a lot of things including (2 years with them):

a) Product Development & Implementation (I work with the tech team to develop our online adaptive learning system).
b) Marketing - Basically online and social media marketing is something only I handle, my inputs are also taken in other marketing initiatives.
c) CSR- I started the organization's CSR initiative. Tied up with an NGO to support Girl education. Help in Fundraising, volunteering and marketing thr products.
c) Innovation: Fields like gamification of edu. Currently building a game for CAT (indian test) preparation. Again I head the project.
d) I also pitch in when it comes to sales and a little bit of teaching. Teaching would include some English/Business basics/Communication and soft skills.

I sit with cofounders and discuss strategy and get a holistic view of a business. I think 2 years in a small start up are worth 4 anywhere else. Made excellent connections with other entrepreneurs (one I work closely is starting a crowd funding platform in the US).

GOALS:

Post-MBA (Short term) - Work for a few years in a top consulting firm. Will again help in networking/learning and paying back my loan.

5 year post MBA: A start-up and a venture of my own. The field is undecided but I have a soft spot for online based models.

Very Long Term: Give back whatever I have learnt to the students. This is more like post 50, it can be as a start-up mentor, investor or just plain teach at a b-school.

I think I have described in as much detail as I can. Hopefully I will get a decent response. Please ask any further questions that will help in decoding my chances.

Thanks and Regards,
Akhil

Hi,

It will be very difficult to comment on the candidature in absence of a GMAT score. Your profile looks good as you have been involved in business analyst role and have an experience of leading team as well. Add to this your finance domain knowledge / certifications which if used well will help you differentiate yourself from other typical IT profiles.

International experience will also help.

But for IT profile a lot depends on extra currics ( which you havent mentioned) and GMAT score.

Focus on GMAT for next couple of months and try crossing 700. That will make the overall application pretty formidable.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I was lost at many places in trying to understand your profile.

You have completed lots of certifications, diplomas and exams but make sure your highlight few which are necessary to build a coherent story else adcom may get confused.

IP, auditing and litigation related profiles will always be valued by ISB as there are few applicants who apply with this kind of background. Public sector experience and good brands from private sector which you have on your profile will help.

International conference, publications and French language all will make the candidature strong if you weave it well.

The only thing that you need to focus on is GMAT. Aim for a 700 so that you dont leave anything to chance.

Hi Shilpa,

Your profile looks interesting and balanced with a good mix of different educational qualification, work ex and extra currics. Try to make broad points out of your extra currics to showcase an attribute such as initiative taking ability rather than presenting a laundry list of points.

DRDO experience and then retail experience will add to diversity and experience of working in Singapore will again help.

Though you are likely to get call even at scores such ass 680 but obviously 700+ will be better in any case.

Since you have already done a PGDM, the goals essay will be important for you.

Hope this helps.

Hi Akhil,

Your GMAT score is very good and profile also looks interesting. But still top 15 schools want either a 4-5 year of good work ex with a 730+ kind of score or a 760 kind of score or a super achiever profile.

Still, if you do a good job with essays and application you can crack rank 10-15 schools. But if you are very keen on getting into a B schools next yr then we would recommend keeping a few safer options.

Hi Shreshth,

We would recommend waiting for one more year and getting a score of 730 or so at this experience. 2 years of experience and 700 are both below ISB's average experience of 5 years and GMAT score of 715.
So, how will you defend - Why should ISB take you?

Your extra currics have certain interesting bullet points but they again dont look sufficient to really portray another dimension in your profile and hence differentiate you.

Hi Seniors,

Pls evaluate my profile as below.
I have a question to clarify as well.
I am joining IIM Rohtak(India) (CAT 98.67%ile) this year but still hoping for an admit through GMAT for next academic year mainly targeting ISB. I do not have a very strong profile neither I have a strong track record in my academics.
So should I participate in B school fests this year and try to bring good grades in the trimesters and then apply for ISB in Round 2 or should I apply in round 1?

Below is my profile for evaluation

I got a gmat score of 680.I have a workex of 4 yrs in IT (Fin serv sector).
Acads:
10th CBSE - 86.2
12th CBSE - 82.4
NIT Nagpur - 6.91/10
Work profile :

I have not written my GMAT till now, please tell me my chances on the profile and a score of around approx. 700
Hi shreshth,

You have a very interesting set of skills, hobbies and experiences. These experiences, if portrayed properly can really differentiate you and help you in your admissions.. You need to bring out the impact that you have created to highlight the significance of that achievement.

For example, I would really be interested in knowing about BridgeNIT. How did you do it? How many people are using it? How successful is it?

What about the meta search engine? What made it different? I get it that you are strong technically through these achievements of yours, but for MBA admissions, I need to know whether you have marketing and business understanding as well. Go beyond the technical impact and talk more about business relevance of your work as well.

Now you have written very less about your professional experience. What kind of "strategies" are you working on? What is exciting about your job? How is it related to MBA? What do you want to do post MBA?

Get these answers right, get a score above 700 and you'll have a strong profile. Feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Hi abhinavg86,

Whether you should wait and join ISB is a personal decision. But I can comment on your profile. You have a decent profile but in terms of work experience only, it will be hard to "stand out". So the fight for ISB will be tough.

Secondly, not working full time (while studying at IIM Rohtak) and applying to ISB will raise some serious questions regarding your motivations in doing an MBA. I would personally suggest you continue with the IIM Rohtak program and try to do well there, both academically and in terms of other initiatives as well. There will be a lot of opportunities that you will get and you will gain more by spending time on those rather than preparing to get out of there.
