Hi Ray,

Your profile is good and better balanced than many other profiles which we have seen this year.

Extra currics are good, GPA and acads are also decent. So everything looks good to go.

A suggestion: Our worry is that if you dont craft you essays and app smartly you might be seen as a jack of many trades but master of none. Project yourself as "Jack of many and master of few atleast"

Hope that helps.

Hi sghosh1985,

It's good to see people planning early. You have a great GMAT score, so that's one good thing done. :) and compensated to an extent for your 12th and undergrad score.

While you belong to a competitive pool, and with just 3.5 years experience, there's a lot you can do in subjective areas to help you stand out. The extra currics that you mentioned are great. Think of how you developed and demonstrated passion and leadership through those activities and tie them together. You have not mentioned nay subjective activities/role from your professional life.

Think of the initiatives you have taken, think of the challenges you have overcome as part of the team, think of moments where you showed leadership potential... These are all areas that will show a potential for a successful MBA grad and tie them together (skills + experiences) with your post MBA goals. and you'll be set....

You can also go through our detailed profile evaluation process to get an early feedback.

Hi ray5677,

You have an amazing profile. The key is to differentiate yourself from the pool you belong to. Your masters, work ex in US, extra currics and NGO experience help you here.

And you have a lot of areas where you can achieve that. All your extra currics and NGO experience speak clearly of your leadership potential. Now you just have to put all these landmark events in a coherent fashion and an interesting story.

More importantly, whatever you have achieved so far should be well connected to your post MBA career. It may not necessarily be your experience but the skills you have gained through your experience (both personal and professional).

One last piece of advice which many candidates do not take seriously. If you have interesting stories to tell, do not take things for granted. You still have to write those effectively and bring out the necessary impact to show your strengths. You still have to justify the need of an MBA. Am sure you will.

Since you are a CA by qualification you have an edge. Add to this your experience in setting up manufacturing business. If you use this well you can present a strong combination of operations and finance/ accounting knowledge.

Since your GPA at college was bit average focus of crossing a 700 ( as you have mentioned) on GMAT to plug that gap.

Also, make sure that you talk about some extra currics somewhere in the app to present another dimension of your profile.

Your profile looks good to us..Best of luck.

Hi ,
Would be applying for ISB R1 for class of 2014
X- 89.33 % (2001)
XI - 93.6 % (2003) - both ISC
B.Tech Electrical IT BHU (2005) - 7.6 CGPA
GMAT - 710 (48 QA , 39 VA)

Did a paid summer internship in the POSTECH univ South Korea or 2 months. Worked on a POC compiler for a HDL language being developed at the labs

Work Ex : 3 Yrs at time of applying
I work in the Technology dept. of a Big 4 I-Bank (domain - equity swaps).
1)Got 2 straight promotions. Was one of the few people from my batch to be promoted this year (amid layoffs a week before the promotions)
2)Have been receiving good reviews in the annual review processes
3)Have been involved in a few interesting projects which have received appreciation from senior management
4) Managed an intern for 6 months (only person from my batch to do so after just 1.5 years in the firm)

Extra Curr :

1) Teach Java to 16 visually challenged people since sept 2011. Raised funds for a recording system through my firm (organised an event)
2) Donate to Save the children right since 2009
3) Member of campus placement team at firm. Visited IT BHU as campus coordinator in 2011
4) Co-convener All India Level Paper Presentation Fest at college
5) Chairman IEEE students chapter at BHU
6) Elected Training and Placement Representative of Ele branch at college
7) Selected by school for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards in School
8) Won 3rd prize in a Marketing Plan contest and 1st prize in Live Ad contest in all india management fest of IT BHU

Am concerned about the gap in education. Was due to personal problems, but I cannot possibly mention them in the app. I secured a IIT JEE rank in the 5000s in 2002, but as I wasn't getting any good options, so opted for another drop.

Suggestion for ESSAY TOPIC for ISB-YLP Programme

The essay topic for the first round of ISB-YLP Application Process is:
Tell us about two of your most significant accomplishments.

I have a choice to choose between
1.How I dealt with my health problems and how I completed my Semester when I was on the verge of drooping the Semester due to above mentioned health problems. And,how it made me strong and the things I discovered about me and lessons learnt etc..etc..
2.I am from a non-Hindi speaking state. My college is situated in Hindi Speaking State. So,how I realized the importance of the speaking Hindi in my college and how I learnt it eventhough there are people criticizing my Hindi? And,how my Hindi Speaking helped in the later stages.

Are they relevant to the topic?
If yes, which one will be a better essay topic as a significant accomplishment?

Regards,
Vamsi.

Hi Droid,

You have a good profile. It's only a matter of how you are able to project it in the essays with effective stories. Your acads are strong, though GMAT is average. But as long as your quant is good, you can show consistency as it is in line with your current career.

You have demonstrated good career progression. Make sure you have this as a highlight in your essays through relevant and impactful stories. In addition, what is the part of your job or contribution at work that will help you differentiate from others from tech background (apart from the domain, I-bank, that is not in your hands).

Your extra currics are decent. A special mention is deserved by your teaching experience to visually impaired students. Explain the need, why you did so and what was the impact. The more the impact, the higher need you have solved and the greater is your contribution.

Yes, the gap in education is an issue. "Personal problem" is not a good enough justification to lose 2 years. What else did you do in those 2 years apart from preparing for JEE.

Hi Vamsi,

IF you are trying to assess the relevance of an example, think of it this way. All events in your life that have made a significant impact on you as a person and are dear to your heart, are important. You need to think how those events have changed you as a person, as a professional and how your current skills/strengths are developed though those events.

You are going very good in terms of introspection and touching at relevant events. From the 2 events specified, the health problem is not that significant as the second problem. My perspective is, dealing with a health problem is not a significant achievement if you think from a leader's perspective. But as a leader, you will constantly be challenged in terms of people issues, cultural challenges, etc. So your achievement to cope with a language problem to overcome a friendship barrier or as a medium to mix up with the existing culture is significant. Project it in terms of challenges overcome, what you thought, what you did and what you achieved in addition to how this achievement will be useful to you and what qualities you have developed as a result.

Hope this helps.
