sgnikc45 wrote:Hello GoISB,

Before I give you a summary of my profile, I want to thank you for giving us the opportunity to get our profiles evaluated.

My Stats :
X grade : 76%
XII grade : 40 %
Graduation (Bachelor of Computer Applications, India) : 78 %
Post-Graduation (Master of Science, Computer Applications, India) : CGPA 3.2/4.0
GMAT score (Mock tests) : 660. I am working on my weak areas and trying to hit the 700 mark.

The first thing that you will notice is my score in the XII. I have a genuine reason for this but I don't want to use it as reason to justify my candidature. I got back on my feet after XII as evident from my grad and post grad scores. I understand that all my other scores are at the most at an above average scale. Although, I want to point out that after almost failing in the XII, I have become very passionate about success and have been on a pursuit to redeem myself. Because of my low XII marks, I was unable to pursue a degree from any of the reputed institutes in India. After working for 4 years, I feel that I have got my profile to a level where I can at-least prove that I am serious about pursuing a degree from reputed institutes like the ISB.

Work Experience :
Total Experience : I will be applying for 2015 and will have 4+ years of work ex by then.
Industry : Information Technology
Role : Application Development
Current Company : Citi
Domain : Financial Risk
Current Designation : Assistant Manager (Role : Apps Dev Programmer Analyst)
Current Projects : I just delivered a project that was developed from scratch where I was the only developer other than my manager.

Before joining Citi, I worked with two mid size companies in the Telecommunication domain. In my first company, I worked onsite in India itself for a leading mobile phone service provider in India for 3 Months. In my second company, I lead a team of junior developers and quality analysts where my responsibilities included requirements gathering, design, development and mentoring. In addition to this, I also worked on developing proof of concepts for evaluating whether a technology was well suited for a project or not.

In summary, I have extensive experience in the end to end development of applications from scratch and I have worked on 6-7 projects till date.

Extra Curricular Activities :
1. I was MCC (Marching Parade) leader in school (2002-2003)
2. I have won many skating tournaments securing 1st, 2nd and 3rd rank. (2001-2003)
3. I play the guitar and the harmonica.
4. I am a part of a cycling group and frequently go on cycling expeditions.
5. I play chess and participate in online chess tournaments from time to time.

I wan't a realistic opinion from you about my chances to make it through the selection process.

PS : I am 26, Male and don't have any gaps in education or work-ex.

Thanks for all the help!

Hi Suman,

With the limited information ( no details about your work ex) and without GMAT score it is difficult to comment in your candidature. The only this we can say is that you come from a diverse domain and work experience duration is fine.

Once you are done with GMAT you can repost your query.

Hi,
Could you please evaluate my profile for ISB ?

Gender : Male
Age : 26

Xth (CBSE): 86.6
XIIth (CBSE): 80.0
GMAT : 730
Engineering Graduate
Percentage : 64.3% [through a world bank funded college, in a state university]

Work Ex : 3+ years
Details : Working in IT Sector, in Cognizant, a Fortune 500 Company. Have got a promotion
during this time. Work involves design, development and optimization of Supply Chains
for retail businesses, requiring functional knowledge of Supply Chain Management. Have worked for number of major US retail businesses. My account is the fastest growing one in the company.

Extra Curric :
- I was part of many extra curricular activities during school.
- Took up guitar and singing just out of interest during 1st year of college, learnt
by myself. But it helped me out as I could fund my expenses and could offset the
costs by tutoring others. This was a necessity as my family was facing some financial
issues after my father's health deteriorated.
- Was part of college fest organizer team as well as took part in number of cultural events as well.
For the event management did resource gathering, obtaining sponsorship, advertising and such.
- Was also involved in editing of a book me and my friend published during graduation. Have a copy
of the book.
- Cleared Army SSB as well during graduation .
- Did a certificate course in French during college approved by my university, in the university.

- After I finished graduation, couldn't go for a normal IT job as I had to look after
our medical clinic, a family business, due to my father's continued problems with
his health. Introduced few pathology tests via outsourcing during that time, an
idea which enabled us to increase the reach of our practice, without setting up of
expensive instruments. Recently have started development of our clinic's website.

- During the same time period, came into touch with few local NGOs who frequented our
setup for subsidized medical aid. Helped those as well as got involved in their
activities as well. Led a team of four in their mission. Thus, was also involved in
voluntary work through them.

- Was a participant in cultural events at work place as well.

Others : - Had taken an year break after school. Was a medical student during school. But
seeing better opportunities for non medical made me take that path. During that year,
cleared Maths eligibility as a private candidate via CBSE board as well as state and national level entrance exams of both medical and non medical streams.

My question is that how good is my profile? I am aiming for this year. If its not good enough and so I delay the application by 1 year, what tips can you give to enhance my profile, if possible ?

Thanks.

-GMAT 710 (Q 81, V 88).....think I can improve this by 20-30 points atleast

-Graduated in 2008 from a business school in UK with a degree in accounting and finance. Topped my degree in year one. Ended up with an upper 2.1 degree.

-planned on working in UK itself in order to get some international work ex but had to move back to India because of my fathers death (3 weeks after final term). Had to take care of family affairs so moved back.

-working in the business development division of a firm with interests across hydropower, textiles and education. Have worked across all 3 sectors. Currently leading a team in implementing the expansion/diversification of the education vertical. The idea for diversification was my brainchild. I'm the youngest at the firm at a senior managerial role.

-short term goal is to make a transition to a top tier management consulting firm.

-Extra curricular: work with one of the most prominent environmental NGO in the country. Having lost my father to blood cancer I have organized blood donation camps as its a cause near my heart. Redrafted and implemented the corporate social responsibility charter at the firm with a focus on sanitation for the poor and improving female financial literacy.

How are my prospects for ISB?

Thanks

This will help us better understand the profile.

HI Rahul,

The profile looks good and well balanced for ISB. GMAT score is good and work ex looks diverse. So, you should be able to leverage the initiatives and achievements in essays.
International education will also help.

This biggest question, however, which you will have to answer is "What is the need of second MBA" especially from an Indian school. If you want to get into consulting, why didnt you do it after your first MBA. Or was it because you couldnt pick up a good job post MBA given the personal emergency.

If you can defend that well we dont see any issues.

Let us know if you have any queries.

Hi,

Thanks for replying back and giving your time.
I worked full time for about 9 months. After that I joined Cognizant.
As a matter of fact the primary purpose of joining Cognizant was to accrue some capital and get some real world corporate exposure, experience and some polishing, the traits I felt I was lacking. I had this aim to continue and expand the clinic into a business entity, an endeavor of more than 30 years and a well established brand in our region, started by my father and close to our hearts.
Now, after more than 3 years in Cognizant, my mind opened, my horizons broadened with some understanding of how a big business operates, I feel a general management degree will add to my entrepreneurial skills as well as give me some leverage vis a vis future investors. That's my whole thought process at this juncture.
With this understanding can you comment on my profile now ?
Thanks for your patience and time.

oh..given you mentioned B school, we assumed MBA degree. Apologies. You are good to go and have a solid chance at iSB. While it is not necessary if you retake gmat and get additional 20 points, that will surely help.

Hi Confuseddesi,

We think that you should not try to muddy up things with the entrepreneurial experience. It breaks the coherency of story and you will not be able to build a story around 9 months business, 3 yrs IT job and now an aspiration to build your venture. Doesnt gel well.

Use the 9 months experience only as a extra curricular and get some brownie points for the same. Position yourself as a regular corporate person. Highlight the achievements ate workplace and extra currics. Your GMAT score is decent and should help.

If you can do this well, you will get an interview call. Our worry is that a jumbled up story will jeopardize the chances.

Feel free to contact us anytime to discuss in detail.
