IMO D

Only option C and D have used IT which is in agreement with A SLOTH. In C "Suspended in the leafy canopy" seems to modify the early explorers.

I see that (D) is the best of the choices, but it seems like the antecedent "it" is used incorrectly. Did anyone else feel that way?
