Question 1 is damn tricky!!

(1) is clearly insufficient because it does not give any information about the number of people who are employed.

(2) says that among the people who are 65 or older 20% of men and 10% of women are employed.

Lets say the number of people who are 65 or older is 500 and out of that 400 are male and 100 are female.Then according to (2) 20% of 400=80 and 10% of 100=10 so 80+10=90 which is 22.5% of 500.Try plugging in any number and you will find the condition to be true.Hence B.

in such a case start by seeing what you have. Unfortunately we cannot draw a table but if u have access to the MGMAT word problems guide they have a great table there.

Ok,

You know total teachers (M +W) = 1400
Of which 42% consider engaging in research essential. = 0.42 (1400)
So total who dont consider it imp = 0.58 (1400)

Statement 1) 36% of men and 50% of women consider research imp

Assume total women is = W so total men = 1400 - W

Given

0.36 ( 1400- w) + 0.5 ( w) = 0.42 (1400). Since W stands for total women you have the ans

only one variable so u can ans the question

Statement 2) gives total men interested in no of men interested in research = 288

so you know no of women interested in research = (42* 1400) - 288

But with this you still cannot find the total number of women in the group. If you were given the split or the ratio of M to W as a whole or if you know the ratio of M: W in the group who were not intersted in research you could find the ans. But on its own statement 2 is insufficient
