Hello all!
This is my first time posting, I've been (lurking and) learning from all your questions and answers and I see I've got a lot of work to do!
I've got tons of questions, here's my first, can someone please explain the answer to this?

In a certain senior class, 72 percent of the male students and 80 percent of the female students have applied to college. What fraction of the students in the senior class are male?

(1) There are 840 students in the senior class
(2) 75 percent of the students in the senior class have applied to college.



Here's what I did:

T(total students) =m+f
C = .75m+ .8f

1) T = 840 NS
2) .75T = .75m + .8f

1&2) 630 = .75m + .8f



Also, can someone tell me how to embed the image/attachment in my post?

My ans would be C

Combined we have

0.75(M+F) = 840 so 0.75M + 0.75F = 840

and

0.72M +0.8F = 840

So 2 variables 2 equations. We can solve with simultaneous equations.

Pls confirm answer

Your calculation makes sense to me, but thats not the right answer.
The correct answer is B

T = number of students in senior class
M = number of the male students in the senior class
F = T-M = number of the female students in the senior class

0.75T = 0.72M + 0.8 (T-M)
0.75T = 0.72M + 0.8T - 0.8M
0.75T - 0.8T = 0.72M - 0.8M
-0.05T = -0.08M
M = 0.05T/0.08

Thus, M = (5/8 )T =62.5%T
or 62.5% of the senior class are male students

must have stopped thinking when I wrote the earlier post. Ans is B

Statement B clearly gives

72M + 80 F = 75 (M+F)

so 5F = 3 M
so F = 3/5 M

This is sufficient to find the proportion of male sutdents. You are not asked the exact number. To find only proportion or percentage this is sufficient
