by Beat The GMAT, Dec 28, 2011

This article is part of a 10-part series where we will be highlighting the most popular GMAT stories of 2011 from the Beat The GMAT community, in countdown fashion.

Can you even believe that someone can pull a nearly 300-point improvement in one month?! It sounds crazy, we know, but that's what our member jimpropheit did. The Philippines native living in Japan went from a 470 to a 760 in record time, so a hearty congrats from the BTG team!

As he puts it, he was absolutely shocked when he saw his first GMATPrep score of 470, especially since he was an engineer and expected to score highly on quant. But in the end, coming up with a plan and sticking to it paid off. You should definitely check out his full pot here: From 470 to 760 in one month (I did it! yay!), but here is one of our favorite excerpts:

On the first week of May, 2011, we had a week-long holiday, which Japanese call the "golden week." Without anything to do in Japan, I decided to go back to the Philippines and spend my holidays home. On my vacation, I met a friend from high school who just finished her MBA from one of the top 10 business schools in the US. We chatted for hours and she gave me the most valuable advice that I did not understand at first but later helped me with my preparation for GMAT. Her advice, was simple: "Don't just read the problems; understand them." Anyway, my friend's stories in business school inspired me and my desire to take my MBA was awaken again. After the I chatted with my friend, I immediately booked a GMAT appointment on the 1st of August to have enough time to prepare for the exam.

That's definitely great advice! For more advice from jimpropheit, read the full story here: From 470 to 760 in one month (I did it! yay!).
