Hi Prachich1987,

Two concepts are being tested here: Idioms and Parallelism.

"Both...and" is a relatively common GMAT Idiom. Notice also that the two parts of the Idiom are parallel in construction:

"both that NOUN VERB...and that PRONOUN VERB...."

Choice (D) correctly uses the Idiom, puts the sentence in parallel form, and does not create a sentence fragment.

Its best to be suspicious of "where" in these SC problems. "Where" should refer to a location, a place that can be identified in the sentence. Here best antecedent you can find is "depths" ---> depths is not a location or a place and technically "where" can not be used. I am pretty sure that is one reason why C is wrong.

Always be suspicious of "where" (not saying its always wrong) --- but thats one thing I have noticed in these SC questions.

C is wrong.

Reason:

The questions statement means that Submarine exploration reveals two thing:
One: hot water vents through the sea floor at great depth
two: Hot water supports diverse life forms in absence of life.

This meaning is distorted in C.actually C is a incomplete sentence .
Further more, C seems to suggest that hot water vents thruogh the sea floor in the absence of light(Not the intended meaning here).

C uses "vents" as a noun (hot water being the modifier) which changes the intended meaning of the sentence.
