Hi! I'm new here. Female, 23 years old, Scandinavian. Just got home from my first GMAT. Scored a 620. Have been spending the past two hours beating my self up about it.

I have always been "a number person", focusing my undergraduate studies on finance, accounting and calculus. I wrote my bachelors thesis on trading strategies, I worked as a part-time student intern at one of the "Big 4" accounting firms during my studies and my final GPA was ranked 5th out of 450 students of graduating class with mostly economics, finance and accounting courses. I wanted to pursue a top MSc Finance-program next fall. My career goal was becoming a financial analyst and eventually a financial journalist. (I love to write!)

Wanted and was, because now all my dreams are completely shattered by this horrible score.

Panicked at the first question of the Quant-section and was never able to regain control. Scored a horrible 37. Scored 38 in Verbal with little or no focus on this part while studying. I guess I can gear it up a point or two with some focused studying. (I am not a native English speaker.) I am horrified by the Quant-score, even though I realized it all went down the drain during the section. I feel like the score is equivalent to "You are stupid as f...and should stay far away from anything related to finance." That is how my brain works. Self-esteem and confidence? Don't think so.

So, I guess I have two options. Either devote the next 31 days to as many TIMED quant questions and practice tests as possible to regain some confidence, as well as fine-tuning my verbal skills, and hopefully score something a little more dignifying in January/February. Or, I could just give up and settle with the fact that I am stupid... Wish me luck.

Hi GMATGoneRough,

Thanks for introducing yourself, and welcome to our community!

Just to throw in my 2 cents about your situation: try not to stress out too much about your GMAT score! Remember, the GMAT is just ONE component of your total application package that application committees consider. Additionally, a score of 620 is not bad at all. And if you're thinking about re-taking, a 620 is a fine baseline to have to really achieve some nice improvements in your score. It sounds like your biggest problem during your test was stress management, you should read some of the articles about this here: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/category ... t-test-day

Don't be so hard on yourself for not reaching your GMAT score goal the first time around. Your life will not be determined by a GMAT score: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/03/ ... nt-in-life

Keep your head up and stay positive! And know that you have this community here for you as well to support you along the way. I'm sure you are going to be successful.

Hi Folks,

This is Rizwan Wangde. Basically from Mumbai, India.

I will be completing 5 Years Total Work Experience this April. I am currently working as a Sr. Database Administrator at one of the most prestigious banks in the Middle East. Prior to that, I was working as a Software Engineer (Oracle DBA) at Infosys Technologies Ltd. in India.

I think this is the right time for me to start acting upon achieving my long term goals. Searching for the right long term goal(s) was a difficult task. I had to spend a lot of time, alone, to figure out what were the best qualities in me. And then to analyze what would be the best career path after an MBA. I came up with 1 - Management Consulting!

I have started preparing for the GMAT and hope to start applying in 2012.

Thanks Rizwan for making that introduction, and welcome to our community! Business school is a great way to make the transition from IT to management consulting, so I think this education is a good investment for you.

I look forward to watching your journey from GMAT to admittance! All the best!

Hello Everyone

I'm Aditya. I belong to New Delhi, India and am currently working in Hyderabad in a s/w firm.

I did my graduation from IIT Guwahati and after that, I have spent 3.5 years wondering "What Next?" in my career. I appeared in CAT for IIMs in 2007 and scored a 92 percentile but have never been focused after that as I never understood the value of an MBA.

Now that's still the case but I want to be left pondering only after I've written my GMAT. I'm targeting April 24th as my date (yes, I've not registered yet). I've been lurking around Grockit and BeatTheGMAT for a while because I do not have time for real classes as I'm working. Then one day, I encountered the 60-day course and I hope this will fulfill my desire to learn from a set course. I'm already into Day 5 of the course and I really hope that I work hard this time and clear the GMAT with good results.

See you around folks!
