GMAT CAT

by chaitanya.mehrotra » Sat Jul 30, 2011 4:48 am
I have already taken the GMAT once and used all the CAT of MGMAT & Kaplan once.
I am rewriting the GMAT this Aug end. I am a bit confused over if i should reuse the exiting CAT's of kaplan and MGMAT again or go for another CAT package from some other company.
Can some expert please guide ?

i received a pm regarding this post.

the only two sources of practice tests about which i can give meaningful comments are the mgmat and gmat prep tests; it appears you've already exhausted those tests.

that's *a lot* of tests -- remember, there's no reason to take practice tests extremely often during your preparation! taking lots and lots of practice tests WILL NOT lead to improvement!

remember that a practice test is an assessment, not an improvement tool -- much like running a race if you're a runner, or competing in a dance competition if you're a dancer.
think about being a runner who just runs race after race after race -- you wouldn't ever get faster! it's the training between races that would make you faster.
the same is true of gmat practice tests -- taking the tests themselves will not produce improvements; it's the studying that you do between those tests that will produce improvements.

so, whatever tests you choose to take, here's the best idea:

DURING MOST OF YOUR PREPARATION
* take one practice test every 2-3 weeks
* REVIEW THOROUGHLY in the intervening time (1 practice test should provide enough material for several days of review)
* STUDY ADDITIONAL MATERIAL in the weak areas you discover on the practice test

WHEN YOUR TEST IS A WEEK OR SO AWAY
* take 2-3 practice tests
* EMPHASIZE TIMING. at this point, do not worry about content -- when you are very close to the test, you should be focusing on the overall rhythm of the exam rather than on the individual component subjects.
* if you don't get to review these exams much -- or even if you don't get to review them at all -- that's fine; the point is to practice rhythm and overall timing.

good luck with whatever practice tests you decide to use -- just remember not to over-take them.
