in 1739, he was arrested. Take a case wherhe he started pedalling in 1739.. so the 2nd document might havee been written in 1759..

(E) The arrest record provides better evidence that Schnitzler peddled than does the undated document. (the arrest record is oficial and dated hence this is definitely a better evidence than Schnitzler's statement

I just found only answer keys not explanations. I took this question from one of GMAT paper test pdfs.

I thought this was E because it is more probable (official record vs a statement). Not sure why this is C but let me think this through... if the undated doc was written at the same time ES was arrested, the doc would have been written before 1759. However, if he wrote the statement 20 years before, he would have written it in 1719. Difference between 1765 and 1719 is 46 years...

...can anyone else explain why it is C? I've gone and confused myself!!

Let me share this agony here: whatever tough the question is, you will find a discussion on beatthegmat but for most of the unexplained answers this is the worst place...what the hell moderators are doing here, why so many open question on tougher end and lot of answer for easy one...
second all this IMO c guys are what to say I dont have good word for them...

this is a very nice q and i too seriously looking for logical answer...can somebody do that

Lets see if this satisfies you:

There can be only 2 cases here:
1] either he started peddling in 1739
2] or, he started peddling before 1739

for 1] the document, would be from 1759, which is before 1765.
for 2] the document definitely has to be from an year before 1765. In fact, it has to be from an year before 1759.

Clear C.

This is such an easy question....i was too scared to opt C.
