Hi there,

In the below sentence, is 'they' ellipted from 'when they are asking for change part of the sentence'? And when can we ellipt?

" While rulers in the Gulf are embracing online networks to promote their own achievements, ordinary citizens are being jailed, deported and harassed when asking for change."

I wanted to ask why 'they and are' are missing in this part of the sentence: ........when [they are] asking for change.

A handful of conjunctions-- most commonly if, when, while, before, after, and although -- can serve to introduce a VERBLESS clause: a clause in which the subject and verb are omitted, but their presence is understood.
