Q1. Are x and y both positive?
a. 2x - 2y = 1
b. x�y > 1

OA is C

Q2. Of 1400 college teachers surveyed, 42% said they considered research essential. How many teachers surveyed were women?
a. In survey 36% of men and 50% of women said they considered research essential
b. 288 men said they considered research essential

Here the OA is A[/spoiler]. But why can't it be D as with the info given 42% teachers (588) considered research essential. In option B, its given that 288 men said they considered research essential, the remaining has to be women i.e. 300.
Moreover it is the same answer we get when we solve A. Please clarify.

Q3. If x is a positive number less than 10, is z greater than average of x and 10?
a. z is closer to 10 than x on the number line
b. z = 5x

OA says A. But my question is if I plug in different values of x & z, I get different answers.
Example: for X =2 & Z = 8, Z is greater than Average of X & 10 but for
X = 2 and Z = 3, Z is not greater than average of X & 10. Different answers for different values, thus it can't be A.

Given: Say, number of men = M and number of women = W => (M + W) = 1400
42% of 1400 = 588 said they considered research essential

Statement 1: 36% of men and 50% of women said they considered research essential
=> (0.36M + 0.50M) = 588

We have two equations in two unknown. We can solve for W.

Sufficient.

Statement 2: 288 men said they considered research essential
Therefore (588 - 288) = 300 Women said they considered research essential. But this doesn't tells us about total number of women teachers that were surveyed.

Not sufficient

Correct answer is A.

The question asks for total number of women teachers not how many women teachers said they considered research essentials. There may be some women who didn't say so.

While considering statement 1, you simply can't assume z = 3 for x = 2! Statement 1 says "z is closer to 10 than x on the number line", which means z must be greater than [x + (10 - x)/2]. For x = 2, z must be greater than 6.
