by vikram4689 » Tue Dec 06, 2011 8:12 pm
I am facing a distinct issue while doing RC. I can read and assimilate novels, wsj, nature article but when i do gmat RC. I feel difficult to comprehend may be it is because of clever writing style with while gmat test makers modify original articles. Now the ques is

how should i proceed to progress in RC.

Practice, practice, practice. You could try the Difficult passages of Aristotle Prep's RC 99. Those passages are way harder than the actual GMAT passages, so you might become accustomed to reading really difficult material. This is one possibility for you.

I recommend that you not treat Reading Comp the same way as you do the other sources mentioned. Instead focus while you read and find a way to build on each paragraph as you move forward. To do this you need to stop at the end of the first paragraph and come up with a main idea for that paragraph. If you know what is going on in the first paragraph then you can build on this in the next paragraph.

Try stopping at the end of each paragraph and writing down a few words for the main idea. Do not write down details such as names and dates but instead just capture the main idea of the paragraph. In this way you should be able to pick up on the thread that runs through each passage.

If you are not able to state the main idea of a paragraph then go back and re-read that paragraph. In this way you will not be move forward but will just muddle through without understanding. I know it sounds simple but just forcing yourself to extract the main idea from each paragraph can turn your reading comp blues around!
