R136a1 is the most luminous star known to humankind.

I believe that it forms meaningful sentence.

When a prepositional phrase is set off by a comma, it can describe the subject or the noun immediately preceding the comma.

So, R136a1 should have been just before the prepositional phrase :

.... R136a1, 60 percent more massive than the theoretical limit at the time it was discovered.....

The problem I see is that "R136a1 is 60 percent more massive than the theoretical limit at the time it was discovered" is improper. That phrase implies that the theoretical limit has mass, when in fact the theoretical limit is simply a number, not a physical object.
