In terms of physics, the characteristic feature of the roller coaster is that the cars' potential energy, gained through their being lifted by a chain drive through the Earth's gravity to the top of the first drop, has been converted to kinetic energy by the time the ride ends.

(A) cars' potential energy, gained through their being lifted by a chain drive
(B) cars' potential energy, a gain achieved as they are lifted by a chain drive
(C) potential energy from the cars' being lifted by a chain drive
(D) potential energy of the cars, gained as a chain drive lifts them
(E) potential energy gained by the cars, being achieved while a chain drive lifts them

ans D

confused between D and E

i selected D ..but i want to know a solid reason why E is wrong apart the reason that being is almost always wrong on gmat land

in E "being achieved" after the comma modifies cars... it seems as if the cars are "being achieved" --- that can't be right.

Try to see the incoherence in option E. If you were to interpret E, it would read:

1. Potential energy (was) gained by the cars
2. Potential energy (was) 'being achieved' by the cars (thru a certain process)

You can now perhaps figure out that the same phenomenon (of the acquiring of potential energy by cars) is getting described by two different tenses.

Do note that 'was' is neither explicitly mentioned nor be assumed; have just used it for clarity.

Differentiate the above usage from a similar usage but a better usage (assuming 'being' is correct):

..potential energy gained by the cars, while being lifted through the Earth's....
