Hi,
i need help on this question.

During a 10-week summer vacation,was the average(arithmetic mean) number of books that Carolyn read per week greater than the average number of books that Jacob read per week?

1) Twice the average number of books that Carolyn read per week was greater than 5 less than twice the average number of books that Jacob read per week.

2) During the last 5 weeks of the vacation,Carolyn read a total of 3 books more than Jacob.

Whats the OA ?

1. 2*C > 2*J - 5, where C and J are Carolyn's and Jacob's avg.

If C = 10 and J = 11, the eqn holds good
If C = 10 and J = 9, the eqn holds good.
So we can't decide if C > J or C < J. Insufficient.


2. What if Jacob read more books in the first 5 weeks ? So this
is again insufficient.

We can't come to a conclusion combining both the stems either. So E.

Question says

Is Ac > Aj
or Ac-Aj>0

St1

2Ac>2Aj-5
Ac-Aj>-5/2
No Suff

St 2

Info for the last 5 weeks no suff


1 & 2

Don't think they help solve the problem when combined

Answer is definitely E.

We want to know if AvgC>AvgJ

Stmt 1

2AvgC>2AvgJ-5 if we divide by 2 we get
AvgC>AvgJ-2.5 we can rearrange further to get
2.5>AvgJ-AvgC or AvgC-AvgJ>-2.5 either way the difference could be positive negative or zero INSUFF.

Stmt 2

Knowing about the last 5 weeks doesn't help.

Together still nothing.

Are you positive that you wrote the question out properly. If statement 1 said something about 2AvgC>2AvgJ-5 in the first 5 weeks and statement 2 remained the same the answer would be C.
