If (y+3)(y-1) – (y-2)(y-1) = r(y-1), what is the value of y?
(1) r2 = 25
(2) r = 5

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

simplifying the equation we get the following :

(y-1)*(5-r) =0

If this is true then 3 things can be true :

1) y=1 OR
2) r=5 OR
3) y=1 and r=5

Now (A) and (B) doesn't provide any info from which y can be determined.

if r^2 =25, r can be +5 or -5. If r=-5, then y must be equal to 1 but we don't know that

if r=5, that mean (y-1) may or may not be =0

(E) is the answer
