“To succeed financially, Zapped needs greater name recognition. It should therefore diversify its commercial enterprises. The rock group Zonked plays the same type of music that Zapped plays, but it is much better known than Zapped because in addition to its concert tours and four albums, Zonked has a series of posters, a line of clothing and accessories, and a contract with a major advertising agency to endorse a number of different products.”

---------------

Author concludes that music group company, Zapped should diversify its commercial enterprises so as to succeed financially. The line of reasoning is based on some factors behind the popularity of a similar music group Zonked. The argument is unconvincing for several reasons.

Firstly, the author attributes the popularity of Zonked to only few factors such as having posters, clothing accessories and a contract with major advertising agency. There can be several other factors which determine a music group's popularity such as quality of music, artist's performance etc.Without providing enough evidence about all the possible determinants behind Zonked's success and weighing only few factors for its success is unconvincing.

Secondly, the argument doesn't provide enough details of both the companies such as how old each of the companies is, what promotional techniques each employs etc. Zonked might have been in the market for a long time and might have conducted a large number of concert tours and thus might have gained popularity and remained financially succesful. Zapped might have entered the market recently and have conducted only one musical concert. Without much evidence, it would be improper to agree with author's conclusion

Furthermore, author mentions that Zapped should diversify commercial enterprises and fails to clarify what enterprises Zapped should get diversified. Whether the diversification should be into similar fields as that of Zonked? Zonked might have been financially sound before they diversified and if Zapped follows similar style, it might be risky and also there's a threat to Zapped survival.

In order to make the argument more persuasive, author should have conducted a study to understand all the factors that contributed to Zonked's success and he should have searched for alternative ways for becoming financially sound. Author should have provided more information about the past history of both the groups and the fields which Zapped is planning to get diversified.

In whole, the argument assumes that the factors behind one groups success will also prove to be successful for other group. It doesn't appear to consider possible alternatives and lacks necessary information to arrive at the conclusion that Zapped should diversify its enterprises to succeed financially.
