IMO: B.

A - Usage of could refers to past and ',+ing' as previous clause is not a immediate effect of subordinate clause.
b -
C - ,+ing modifier
D - being dependent is wrong
E - Both X as well as Y is wrong idiom.

IMO C.

A, B - we need because to show casual relationship, in that is wrong

D - being dependent is wrong. Moreover splits each factors separately where climate and altitude should come together as in the original sentence.

E - dependent is wrong, both X as well as Y is wrong
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.
