x y problem , simplify versus plug in

If x does not equal -y, is (x-y)/(x+y) > 1

1) x>0
2) y<0

[spoiler] My approach was to simplify the given expression as follows:

(x-y)/(x+y) > 1
(x-y) > (x+y)
0>2y
0>y

Statement 1 provides no info about y, hence insuff
Statement 2 confirms y<0, hence sufficient

I chose B, however OA is E
Is it best to plug in numbers for such questions or to simplify as I did?
which is faster?

The question asks whether y/(x+y) >0

(x-y)/(x+y)>1 ; (x-y)/(x+y)-1 > 0 (x-y-x-y)/(x+y)>0 ; -2y/(x+y) >0

2y/(x+y) > 0 ; y/(x+y) > 0

statement I and Statement II does not give the conditions ,individually or together

Hence ans = E
