by sanju09 » Wed Apr 08, 2009 4:49 am
The number x and y are not integers, the value of x is closest to which integer?

(1) 4 is the integer that is closest to x + y.

(2) 1 is the integer that is closest to x - y.

Statement 1:
3.5 < x+y < 4.5
depending on y, x can have any value. Insufficient.

Statement 2:
0.5 < x-y < 1.5
depending on y, x can have any value. Insufficient.

Both statements together:
3.5 < x+y < 4.5
0.5 < x-y < 1.5

by adding both inequalities

4 < 2x < 6
2 < x < 3

x could be greater than 2.5, making it closer to 3, or could be less than 2.5, making it closer to 2. Hence, Insufficient. Choose E
