Machine X and Y produced identical bottles at different constant rates. Machine X, operating alone for 4 hours, filled part of a production lot than machine Y, operating alone for 3 hours, filled the rest of this lot. How many hours wouldit have taken machine X operating alone to fill the entire production lot?

1. Machine X produced 30 bottles per minute.
2. Machine X produced twice as many bottles in 4 hours as machine Y produced in 3 hours.

Is the answer B?

1 - insufficient. Just knowing X is not enough. We need relationship
between X and Y or absolute values for X and Y

2 - sufficient. If X produced b bottles in 4 hours, then Y would have
produced b/2 bottles in the next 3 hours. X alone can hence do (b + b/2)
bottles in 4+2 = 6 hours.

Can someone explain why A is insuff and B is suff. I am having hard time figuring it out.

I'm not an expert but I'll try to explain.

According to the question, machine x worked for 4 hours and filled a part of the production lot (we dont know how much is that, could be 30% 40% anything). Machine Y worked for 3 hours and completed the remaining production lot (again we dont know how much)

Statement 1 - X can produce 30 bottles p/m. But we don't know the total quantity of production lot. It could be anything.

Therefore we do not have any absolute value of the total production. Hence insufficient.

Statement 2 - X can produce double the amount of work Y can produce in 3 hours.
Y = B, therefore X = 2B

Therefore to complete the work X = 2B + B
X can produce 2B in 4 hours, therefore total number of hours would be 6
