work life after MBA in medium grade universities

Hi Lisa,

I am new to beat-the-gmat. I have searched the discussion over here but didnt find exactly my question. Can you please solve my some doubts regarding MBA in US.

My Profile includes 550 GMAT score, 3.64 GPA, 3 years of IT industry work experience. still I have not given TOEFL.

I have searched for the MBA universities according to my profile through consultants here. Some consultants are saying univerisities are medium grade universities in 550 GMAT range and some are saying there are very few good universities which accept this score.

I am also interested in reapplying the GMAT test but 1st round admission deadlines are nearby for fall 2009 and I heard that shcolarship & admission chances are better in 1st round only.

Now if I apply in 1st round and get into some universities then I would like to know the campus of this universities and life after MBA.

I have heard that internation student will get 1 year work permit or if I get selected in any campus then employer will file work permit for me. Is this correct? How good campus are in my range universities.

Dear Dhimant,

There is no disadvantage to applying in the second round versus the first round, as long as you meet any stated international deadline. I strongly encourage you to retake the test and apply in the second round. As an international student from India, you are up against tough competition and your current GMAT score puts you at a big disadvantage. That is not to say you could not gain admission to a program with a 550; the question is are these schools that are a good fit for you.

I also encourage you to read our sticky on school selection for tips on identifying programs that are a good match for you. You need to determine which programs offer the curriculum and resources that best match your career goals. US immigration laws do allow international students 1 year of optional practical training in conjunction with a degree program. Whether or not the company files a work permit for you to work beyond that year is up to the company and that will vary based on many factors.

Thanks Lisa for the response.

I am thinking on reapplying GMAT. I would like to know one more thing regarding admission. Do universities count quant and verbal score individually in GMAT or Stress on any perticular score (quant or verbal)? my current score quant: 47, verbal: 20, Total percentile 51.

Dear Dhimant,

The total score matters most, but the individual quant and verbal scores do matter. Ideally, you want to score each section in the 45-50% range (higher is obviously better). Based on what you posted, it appears the verbal section is where you need to make the most improvement.

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your all advice. In between I have give GMAT once again. I got 590 (V28/Q42 - 63 percentile) this time.

Its very low but better than the previous score.

Can you tell me are there any chance for some good universities? My profile is mentioned below.

GPA: 3.64
Work Ex: 3+ in IT firm
Ext Curr: Not much

I am looking for general MBA in US.

There are so many schools in the US, so there are options out there. In your case, I would recommend looking at smaller, regional programs in/around major cities.
