Work Experience Question For MBA Programs

by blueprint » Tue Mar 03, 2009 12:33 pm
Hey everyone,

From researching some MBA programs, I know that the majority require a few years of work experience. However, many programs are not specific in regards to what type of work experience this has to be.

I will be soon graduating with my BA and now I'm in the position where I am looking for work. What type of jobs should I be looking for that will best assist me on my MBA applications? I realize that being young (22) and fresh out of school with a BA doesn't really give me great chances in landing a management position so I'm confused as to what route to take? I'm hoping to start an MBA program at 24 or 25 so the next couple years are very critical for me!

Thanks any help!

Hi BP,
Great question - there is no perfect MBA-feeder job. While many would argue that investment banking and management consulting will position you well for admission into a good MBA program, its more about your experience than the title.

Did you demonstrate analytical, leadership, and managerial skills? You dont have to be in a management position, but AdCom will look to see what skills you developed and utilized during your work experience.

Many candidates get accepted from a variety of non-traditional careers (i.e. education, non-profit, entertainment, government). But they were all able to demonstrate leadership/managerial and business potential.
