A decorator bought a bolt of defective cloth that he judged to be 3/4 usable, in which case the cost would be $0.80 er usable yard. If it was later found that only 2/3 of the bolt could be used, what was the actual cost per usable yard?
A)$0.60
B)$0.90
C)$1.00
D)$1.20
E)$1.70

Let the bolt = the LCM of 4 and 3 = 12 yards.
Amount judged to be usable = (3/4)(12) = 9 yards.
At a cost of 80 cents per usable yard, the amount paid for the 9 yards judged to be usable = 80*9 = 720 cents.
Actual amount of usable cloth = (2/3)(12) = 8 yards.
Since 720 cents was paid for 8 yards of usable cloth, the actual cost per usable yard = 720/8 = 90 cents.

The correct answer is B.

Question : what was the actual cost per usable yard?

Let, Bought Bolts = 24X
Usable Bolts = 18X

Let 18X Bolts are sufficient for one Usable yard
i.e. using 18X Bolts per yard the cost per yard = $0.8
if only 2/3 bolts are Usable then for getting 18X bolts, we will have to buy Y bolts
where (2/3)Y = 18X
i.e. Y = 27X
Cost of buying 24X Bolts = $0.8
Cost of buying 27X Bolts = $0.8 x 27X /(24X) = $0.9

Answer: Option B

We can let the total length of the cloth be 60 yards, so 3/4 x 60 = 45 yards were originally thought to be usable, and the cost of the cloth would be 0.8 x 45 = $36. However, since only 2/3 x 60 = 40 yards are actually usable, the cost per yard is 36/40 = $0.90.

Answer: B
