Q: At the eve of marriage anniversary of Stephen and Mary some special couples were invited.Out of them only 23 couples were there having one child per couple with them.When people observed it , they found that 13 men were without any child and 20 women were also without any child. It is known that only couples were allowed attend the ceremony.For your kind information we will not consider the couple( Stephen & Mary ) for any calculation,since they are hosts.The total number of couples who attended the party( i.e anniversary)

a) 28

b) 30

c)33

d)40

e)can't be determined

since only couples were allowed and there was a single children with every couple.now 1 child can be present with either thei mother or father. so one of the parents will not with the child

so total no. of couples at party = 20 + 13 = 33 Ans. C

Even I came up with the same answer using the same calculation,but the answer is specifically given as (a) 28 without any explanation provided.

Ok I got the answer. See here it is clearly mentioned that only 23 couples had 1 child..

SO 23(either man or woman) of them will not be having child.
Now since 33 of them are not having child. so total 10 are left .
but It is also written that only couples are allowed. This means out of 10 left, they are actually couples who have no child
so such couple no. = 5

thus couples having 1 child = 23
couples having no child = 5
so total [spoiler]28 Ans (a)[/spoiler]

One more for A

23 couples are there each with a child, that means 23 children.
And it was also given that only couples would be allowed. So the additional people are the couples with no children or children themselves.

Now total additional number of people=20+13=33

Out of these 23 are children and the remaining (33-23=10) should be 5 pairs.

So a total of 23 pairs with children + 5 pairs without children=28 couples

I'd just point out that the language of the question makes it nearly incomprehensible. It's impossible to determine from the wording of the question what assumptions we are to make; how many adults can accompany each child, for example?

One thing I must admit : you guys are real genius. If I had even 1% of the brains that you have I would have aced the GMAT , NO KIDDING !!!
