With its abundance of noun inflections, Icelandic is one of several Germanic languages that is compact when written but can lengthen considerably when translated into English.
A. is compact when written but can lengthen considerably when translated into English
B. are compact when they are written, but they can lengthen considerably when they are translated in English
C. is compact when written but can lengthen considerably when being translated into English
D. are compact when written but can lengthen considerably in English translation
E. is compact when it is written but can lengthen considerably when translated in English

Is Parllelism in B wrong
With its abundance of noun inflections, Icelandic is one of several Germanic languages that are compact when they are written, but they can lengthen considerably when they are translated in English

that are compact..when...but they....when..`
Is the use of they after but correct ...
I think it should either have 'that' or nothing.... B: that but they...is not parallel

1. With its abundance of noun inflections, Icelandic is one of several Germanic languages that are compact when they are written, but that can lengthen considerably when they are translated in English

or
2. With its abundance of noun inflections, Icelandic is one of several Germanic languages that are compact when they are written, but can lengthen considerably when they are translated in English
Is my understanding correct

Two doubts:

1. "one of" should lead to singular verb "is"
2. If I am wrong then the correct part of the sentence, which is "one of several Germanic languages that" should be "one of several Germanic languages those"

Pls tell me where I am wrong.

--that refers to germanic languages which is plural hence are is correct

This is my understand about one of
1. One of several germanic languages is good - as we are talking about only one language
2. Icelandic is one of several Germanic languages that are - here that refers to Germanic languages
so we need are.
Note: when ever you see 'that' check the noun closest to it on left, if its plural then verb is plural
if it singular verb is singular-
There is only one exception to above note
Icelandic is the only one of several Germanic languages that is/are--
whenever you see 'the only' then the verb is singulart irrespective of 'that' being there

The only reason I could find to eliminate B is the usage of "translated in English"... it should be "translated into english".

Languages are translated into english....- this is correct.
