Let E be the amount of estate.

The widow receives (1/3)E

Each son receives: [E-(1/3)E]/3 (the leftover i.e. the money that the widow took subtracted from the initial value of the estate divided for the three sons)

The problem states that "the widow and one of the sons received $120.000":

E/3 + E-(1/3)E]/3= 120.000

solve it and you will get that E= $216.000
