I agree with Rahul. I think the first sentence can be further improved by implying "than it was" and simply writing "It was much better than expected".

Note that without context, the pronoun "It" is problematic because we don't know what it's referring to, so this sentence cannot really stand on its own. Presumably the sentence that came before this one has an explicit antecedent for "it". For example: "Despite producing lower revenues, the fourth quarter actually boosted profits. It was much better for the company than expected."
