Where do I begin after so long?

Hi there,

My name is Ella and I'm 35 years old. I graduated with a BS in Marketing & Communications in 2006 and after all these years of working I'm now contemplating getting an MBA. I'm just not sure how to even begin or where to begin looking into the first step to apply for the MBA program. I have so many questions such as: what's the best route online or on campus? How much is it going to cost me? What are my chances of getting in? Have I let too much time lapse before starting a Masters's program?

Has anyone experienced this lapse of time before resorting to entering an MBA program?

Well, I think the first thing to think about is WHY you want an MBA. i.e. What are your post-MBA and long-term goals. All the schools will ask you this, and it helps to think it through. Secondly, is to think about whether you really want to apply to a regular 2 year MBA for which you are a bit on the older side, or whether an Executive or Accelerated program might not be better for you?

Next step, before figuring out where you want to apply, is of course grappling with the GMAT, which will give you an initial indication of what schools might be the right ones for you in terms of chances.

You aren't necessarily too old, and there is not necessarily a time lapse that is too long, but of course your chances will also depend on what you have actually done in the meanwhile....

There are lots of different kinds of MBAs. Many people your age pursue an Executive MBA, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to get a full-time MBA. There's also part-time and online programs. I graduated in 2005, but I took the direct route through college and am only 29 at the moment. It appears that you graduated from undergrad older than most, so you might be evaluated based on your accomplishments since graduating. This will probably work in your favor and I bet you have an interesting story about what you did before or during college.

Obviously it's best to go to the campus, but that's not always financially feasible, so start with online. Check out websites and most of your questions can be answered better there since each school has unique tuition costs, acceptance rates, and programs.

Get ready for a long (but valuable!) process.
