Stmt 1 -

=> x - 3 > y or -x + 3 > y
=> x > y + 3 or -x > y - 3
=> x > y + 3 or x < -y + 3
=> -y + 3 > x > y + 3
Insufficient since x cannot be solved for a unique value

Stmt 2 -

Evaluates to the same equation as Stmt 1
i.e)
=> x - 3 < -y or -x + 3 < -y
=> x < -y + 3 or -x < -y - 3
=> x < -y + 3 or -x <-(y + 3)
=> x < -y + 3 or x > y + 3
=>-y + 3 > x > y + 3

Insufficient since x cannot be solved for a unique value

Stmt 1 and Stmt 2 - Insufficient

Hence IMO E

x in both cases has range of values therefore insufficient

scenarios here mimic those in statement 1 so insufficient

since each statement is equivalent there combination bears no further solution so E.

How can this statement be true
|x - 3| < - y

y is positive so -y will be negative and |x - 3| is going to be a positive value.
How can a positive value(|x - 3|) be less than a negative value(-y)?
Please provide explanation for the answer.

There is a small mistake in typing the question..excuse me..It should be If y>=0 and not If y>0..

Sorry guys..When i pasted the question the equal to sign disappeared and i didnt notice that..The correct question is as below

If y >= 0, what is the value of x?
1. |x - 3| >= y
2. |x - 3| <= - y

This can be true for many combinations of x and y

Statement II: Sufficient
|x - 3| <= - y
This is only possible when y = 0 and x = 3 because
|x - 3| cannot be negative but it can be zero and y=-y = 0 is the only possible way.

So the answer is B
