How can I get an answer just using one statement? Are not needed both equations to solve this DS question? Help!!!

Target question: What is the value of x/3 + y/3?

Statement 1: (x + y)/3 = 6
Nice (and often tested) rule: (a + b)/c = a/c + b/c
So, we can rewrite the equation as: x/3 + y/3 = 6
So, the answer to the target question is x/3 + y/3 = 6
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: x + y = 18
Take x + y = 18 and divide both sides by 3 to get: x/3 + y/3 = 18/3
Simplify to get: x/3 + y/3 = 6
So, the answer to the target question is x/3 + y/3 = 6
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT

Answer: D
