If x=8 and y=8, then x² - y² = 8² - 8² = 0.

Statement 2: x-y = 0, implying that x=y
Substituting x=y into x² - y², we get:
x² - y² = x² - x² = 0.
SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is B.
