What is the largest integer if the sum of three consecutive even integers is 318?

A. 100
B. 104
C. 106
D. 108
E. 111

The OA is D.

Please, can anyone assist me with this PS question? I don't understand how can I solve it. Thanks in advance!

Let x = the smallest value
So, x + 2 = the middle value
And x + 4 = the biggest value

The sum is 318
So, we can write x + (x+2) + (x+4) = 318
Simplify: 3x + 6 = 318
Subtract 6 from both sides to get: 3x = 312
Solve: x = 104
So, the SMALLEST value = 104
This means 106 is the MIDDLE value and 108 is the BIGGEST value

Answer: D

Hi All,

We're told that we have a group of 3 CONSECUTIVE, EVEN integers with a sum of 318. We're asked for the LARGEST integer. This question can be solved in number of different ways, including by TESTing THE ANSWERS.

Since 318 is well above 300 - and the integers are consecutive even integers - the largest number would need to be above 100. Let's TEST Answer D first...

Answer D: 108
IF..... the largest number is 108, then...
the other 2 numbers are 106 and 104.
The sum would be 104+106+108 = 318
This is an exact match for what we were told, so this MUST be the answer.

Final Answer: D

Consecutive even integers constitute an EVENLY SPACED SET.
For any evenly spaced set, MEDIAN = AVERAGE.
In the problem at hand:
Median = Average = 318/3 = 106.
Since the median of the 3 consecutive even integers = 106, the greatest of the 3 consecutive even integers = 108.

The correct answer is D.

If we let n = the first even integer, then the next consecutive even integer is (n + 2), and the one after that is (n + 4). W create the equation:

n + n + 2 + n + 4 = 318

3n = 312

n = 104

So the largest integer is 104 + 4 = 108.

Answer: D
