Hi Ani,

A percentile is essentially "where" you are in line with all test takers. The 90th percentile means that 10% of test takers scored at that level or above. Percentile is different from percent correct and each section of the GMAT (in addition to the overall score) has its own percentile based on the data from all test takers.

The scores that you are given -- The overall score (200 - 800) or the scaled scores (up to 51) -- are just ways to speak about the percentile ranking. The relationship between the scaled score and the percentile can change over time. For example a 750 used to be the 99th percentile. But now it is the 98th.

The basis of everything is the percentile. The 200-800 score is just a way to speak about that...
