Hi forum,

can someone please help me indicating what the "it" refers to? I cannot find the antecedent

Although various eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American poets had professed an interest in Native American poetry and had pretended to imitate Native American forms in their own works, it was not until almost 1900 that scholars and critics seriously began studying traditional Native American poetry in native languages.

Thanks a lot in advance.

I feel the "it" refers to the interest and imitation or rather translation of the Native American poetry, because " not until almost 1900 that scholars and critics seriously began studying traditional Native American poetry in native languages" why did they study? To imitate or translate the native american poetry.

Hope it helps!

"it" refers to "scholars and critics seriously began studying traditional Native American poetry in native languages"
What the sentence means is that scholars and critics didn't seriously study traditional Native American poetry in native languages until almost 1900.

Another example:

It is true that many creative people fail to make mature personal relationships

Here "it" refers to "many creative people fail to make mature personal relationships"
