Are you still reading the other newspaper in town? Did you know that the Daily Bugle is owned by an out-of-town business syndicate that couldn’t care less about the people of Gotham City? Read the Daily Clarion, the only real voice of the people of Gotham City!
Which of the following most directly refutes the argument raised in the advertisement above?
(A) Over half of the advertising revenues of the Daily Clarion come from firms whose headquarters are located outside of Gotham City.
(B) The Daily Clarion usually devotes more of its pages to out-of-town news than does the Daily Bugle.
(C) Nearly 40 percent of the readers of the Daily Clarion reside outside the limits of Gotham City.

Since the argument is about the DB not caring about the people of Gotham and the DC being the only paper that does, we need to look for something that refutes either one of these or both.

The only choice that I see that does this is B.

If most of the pages in DC are not about news of Gotham then it is not acting like the true voice of Gotham.
All the other choices are not related to the contents of the newspaper.

Where did you get the question.Are you sure abt OA.

I also think its B and not D.

Reason being, How does living in town for so many years imply they care for the town more.Its the thoughts in print which should express it.

Giving less news for the town shows, that they have little to report about the town, or don't consider events fit enough to be considered as news.
Which implies, they care less for the town.

(B) The Daily Clarion usually devotes more of its pages to out-of-town news than does the Daily Bugle.
If the Daily Clarion did/did not devote more of its pages to out-of-town news - does this really affect the argument? No, it is outside the scope. News is news, and is not decided up whether the editors care or not.
(D) The editor-in-chief and all the other members of the editorial staff of the Daily Bugle have lived and worked in Gotham City for ten years or more.
D refutes the argument of whether the Daily Bugle cares about the people of Gotham City. Since the editor-in-chief and other members of the editorial staff live and work in Gotham City, this directly refutes the "out-of-town business syndicate" argument and shows the Daily Bugle cares for members of Gotham city.

I stand corrected..."have lived" means that they might still be living in Gotham City, but that however is still not convincing enough.

OE: the statement "Read the Daily Clarion, the only real voice of the people of Gotham City!" put much stress on answer choice D as it talks about the real voice from the people who live there.....

OA after few posts.....

For weakening questions, you have to weaken the conclusion which says that DC should be read as it is the real voice of Gotham's residents. Only B seems to be negate this. AFA D is concerned, it isn't necessary that editor in chief and other members, just by living there for 10 years, care about the people. I'd go for B.
Anyways, what is the source of the question?

Daily Clarion is the voice of Gotham city, and Daily bulge couldn't care less about the people of Gotham city :twisted:

To weaken this, you need to prove that either Daily Clarion is not the voice of Gotham or Daily bulge cares a lot of people of Gotham! :roll:

A is irrelevant, not comparing the revenues of the papers

B does not define out of town news and so is neutral towards both papers

C is irrelvant as it talks about geographical distribution of Daily Clarion's readers

D weakens argument as it proves that editor and his team of staff care about the people of Gotham, having lived there for 10 years

E is irrelevant
