Say Ted has x marbles; thus, Oliver has 2x marbles and Merrill has x/2 marbles.

=> x + 2x + x/2 = 7x/2 marbles

=> 7x/2 = 28 => x = 8

Correct answer: B

Hope this helps!

Let Oliver's marbles = o, Ted's marbles = t and Merrill's marbles = m

o = 2t; t = 2m
o = 2t where t = 2m
o = 2 (2m) = 4m

o + t + m = 28 where o = 4m and t = 2m
4m + 2m + m = 28
7m/7 = 28/7
m = 4

Ted's marbles = 2m where m = 4
Ted's marbles = 2 * 4 = 8

Solution:

We can let x = the number of marbles Merrill has. Thus, in terms of x, the number of marbles Ted has is 2x and the number of marbles Oliver has is 2(2x) = 4x. We can create the equation:

x + 2x + 4x = 28

7x = 28

x = 4

Thus, Ted has 2(4) = 8 marbles.
