Each of the employees in a company is either a manager or a director. If a person is to be selected randomly from the Company, what is the probability that the selected person will be a female director?

1) 80% of the employees in the company are managers
2) There are no male directors in the company

Say there are 100 employees in the company.

Let's take each statement one by one.

1) 80% of the employees in the company are managers.

=> no. of managers = 80 and no. of directors = 20. Can't get the no. of female directors. Insufficient.

2) There are no male directors in the company.

Certainly insufficient.

(1) and (2) together

We know that there are 20 directors and there are no male directors; thus, there are 20 female directors.

So, the probability that the selected person will be a female director = 20/100 = 1/5. Sufficient.

Correct answer: C

Given that total employees = male manager + female manager + male director + female director

Target question => What is the probability of selecting a female director if a person is to be selected randomly from the company?

Statement 1 => 80% of the employees in the company are managers
Managers = 80% of total employees
Directors = (100 - 80% = 20%) of total employees
There is no information about the population of male and female, hence statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2 => There are no male directors in the company
All directors are female but the population of directors is unknown, hence statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining both statements together =>
From statement 1 =>
Manager = 80% and director = 20%
From statement 2 => There are no male directors, all 20% directors are female

From 100% of the total population, female director is 20%
If a person is randomly selected from the total population, the probability of selecting a female director = 20/100 = 1/5

Both statements combined together ARE SUFFICIENT

Answer = C
